Hi, I’m Winston and I live on the sunny island of Singapore.

Career

I’m a Web Ninja with Wego, mainly responsible for designing and building our own web analytics solution. The solution is, at this time of writing, made possible by Ruby on Rails, Ramaze, Javascript, and JQuery. Apart from this, I also lend a hand to managing our MySQL databases.

I started my career as an Enterprise Database Administrator with IBM Singapore where I was outsourced to manage hundreds of MySQL and Oracle databases for Singapore Airlines in a 24 x 7 environment. While I was there, I became a Certified MySQL 5.0 Database Administrator, one of the few in Singapore.

Education

I graduated with an honours degree in Computer Science from the National University of Singapore in 2006. During which I had a taste of entrepreneurship in founding Futureworkz, a web development partnership together with three other course-mates. However, I am no longer affiliated with Futureworkz.

Hobbies

On my other persona, I’m a Weekend Radio Host with the Top Mandarin Radio Station - Y.E.S 93.3FM. I’ll usually be hosting the 7am to 10am show on some Saturday mornings; and during my broadcasting, I’m more commonly known by my Chinese name, Yong Wei 勇蔚. Tune in if you can!

This Blog

This blog was started in 2006 as “The Next Phase” to signify the start of my career, a next phase in life. Unfortunately, it was then forsaken for a period of time, and is now re-launched simply as “Winston{YW}”. Here, I will blog about web development, web design, databases, social media and some bits of my life.

This blog has quite a popular post in the Greasemonkey Script that integrates Gmail with Google Reader as it continues to drive organic traffic. However the script no longer works with the newer version of Gmail. Due to other commitments, I am unable to update or provide further support to the greasemonkey script, but LifeHacker has a great Firefox extension in Better Gmail 2 that has similar functionality and more. Please check that out.
